Head Coach: Scotty Ward
2020: 5-5 (5th in 5AA)
The Tigers were a 1 point loss to Bremen and an OT loss to Haralson County from being the 2 seed in the toughest AA Region in Georgia in 2020. Temple has to replace some big time players in 2021 but they still have experience returning, especially in the skill players, to make another run at the playoffs in 5AA.
Offense: Cam Vaughn returns at QB in 2021. The rising Junior passed for 1100 yards last season and will have a trio of targets back this season. Rising Junior WR’s Malachi Ackles and Kael Whiddon combined for 626 yards on 33 catches in ’20 and will be joined by Senior Shemar Wicker who averaged 25 YPC in his 5 receptions. The question mark for the Tigers is going to be at RB where they will have to replace All Region RB Phillip Johnson. Sophomore Freddie Watkins is slated to carry the load in the backfield next season and I’ve heard alot rumbling about rising Freshman CJ Gray. Honorable Mention All Region OL Javon Moore and Tay Freeman return and the Tigers will be looking for some new faces to step up across the front this Spring and Summer.
Defense: Solid secondary returning. Malachi Ackles was one of the surprises in 2020 at DB. He had 4 ints and returned 2 for TDs. He will be joined by another rising Junior Shemar Wicker who had 4 ints also last season. The Tigers will have to replace 4 All Region guys on defense. Rising Senior LB Kael Whiddon (2nd Team All Region) returns and will be joined by Qua Martin. Look for Senior Javon Moore to anchor an inexperienced DL in 2021. Dalton Whitmire returns and is a solid kicker if needed in a close game.
NwGaFootball Take: The Tigers have big shoes to fill but they do return 6 starters on both sides of the ball including their QB. Temple will be starting there 3rd season in this offensive and defensive system. I think the key is going to be the DL. If they have some guys step up this off season they could compete for a home playoff game in a very tough Region.
Prediction: 4th in 5AA
