Week 4’s Biggest Story: Cass Colonels move to 4-0
The Colonels defeated Temple 17-14 on Friday to improve to 4-0 on the season. To put it in perspective Cass has only had 3 seasons in the last 27 years in which they have won 6 or more games (7 is the max in 2004 and 2006). They have only been to the playoffs 3 times since 1953 with the last trip coming in 2006.
The Colonels are lead by first year Head Coach Steve Gates who was an assistant at Kell the last 4 years. UGA fans might remember him from the early 90’s when he was blocking for Garrison Hearst between the hedges.
The buzz among high school football fans here in NWGA has been about the play of freshman QB #7 Devin Henderson, who has all the potential to be a star in high school, but it has been the Colonel defense and special teams that have gotten Cass off to its fast start in 2020.
The defense is only giving up 12 points a game against some quality opponents. Juniors Ian Lowe and Andrew Nguyen along with senior Elijah Harris have combined 106 TT with 11 TFL. The Colonels are averaging close to 3 sacks a game with Lowe and senor Louis Torres leading the way with 2.5 each.
The real weapon for the Colonels is senior standout kicker #92 Kaleb Speights. He is 9 for 9 on FG attempts with several greater than 40 yards. His scores have been the difference in 3 of Cass’s 4 wins.
The Colonels are back in action this Friday when they travel to Ridgeland to face a very athletic Panther squad.
