We are a third of the way through the 2020 season, I know it’s hard to believe right. Here are some of the storylines and surprises so far early in the season.
1.Cass Colonels: Cass is off to their 1st 3-0 start since 2007 behind 1st year head coach Steve Gates, who spent the last 4 years as an assistant at Kell.
2. Haralson County Rebels: The Rebels are off to a 3-0 start and have climbed to #6 in the AA Rankings. They are getting it done behind a very aggressive defense, holding 3 very good opponents to just 6.7 ppg (Pepperell, Manchester, Bowdon).
3. 7A Private: Christian Heritage and the Darlington Tigers are on a collision course for 10/30. The two teams are both ranked by Calpreps and have looked good in the early stage of 2020.
4. The “Resurgence” of Calhoun: Kind of hard to use the word resurgence when it comes to Calhoun because it seems like they have won everything around here for the last 20+ years. There was a lot of buzz this offseason after the Jackets failed to win the 6AAA title in ’19 then they got news they were moving to AAAAA. Fans, self included, wondered if the Jackets would be able to compete with the big boys. Right out of the gate they proved they were ready. Big wins over Dalton and Cedartown and played #2 Ranked McCallie from Tennessee tough on the road.
5. 7AA: Preseason all the talk was Pepperell vs Fannin for the title. These first three weeks has shown how competitive this Region will be come October. Model playing lights out on defense. Coosa putting up points on offense. Gordon Central features one of the leading rushers in NWGA in Jordan Boone. Dade County is throwing the football all over the place. Pepperell stumbled the 1st two weeks but came back to dominate the #8 team in the State. Fannin only has one game under their belt but look as expected. Chattooga has a high powered balanced offense for the 1st time in a while. Should be Fun down the stretch.
